I bought a video called ‘I want my tree back’ that was made by a local company that no exists. It focussed on Cinder Path Wood and Cuerden Gates Farm. I have news recordings of the eviction at Cuerden Gates farm and it’s demolition and also news footage of the protesters being evicted with the BBC interviewing Larch who is now very well known as Dr Larch Ian Maxey. They interviewed him after dark so some of the protesters may have still been inside the houses. The protesters had knocked openings through the upstairs into the adjoining houses. The houses were weakened prior to the eviction to make the eviction as difficult as possible. I still have lots of newspaper cuttings. Stanworth Wood was beautiful woodland before the road was built.

I remember this protest very well and now have mixed views almost 30 years on. It all started at Cinder Path Wood opposite Cuerden Gates Farm on the A49 near Bamber Bridge. I got to know a few of the protesters for about 12 months of the protest. The first one was a local called Karen Martinak who lived close to Bamber Bridge and grew up in the area and the others were Hyper (seen in the video), the famous Larch ( Larch Ian Maxey) and Chris Maile. They occupied the derelict Cureden Gates Farm that had been vacated by farmers around March 1994. The protesters also occupied the wood opposite. I only arrived after they painted the farm house green. I met these people when I was photographing the farm house and was invited inside. The eviction order was served on the protesters to leave the farm house that took place in June 1994. They moved to the wood opposite until July 94. There were a few sqats around the Bamber Bridge area one of which was called ‘Hippy Heaven’ on the A6 next to the construction site of the motorway. The 3rd was a farm near the petrol station at Clayton Brook following a fire at Hippy Heaven. In February 1995 the protesters were occupying a row of terraced houses on the east side of Blackburn, Rd Darwen. I visited the houses on Fri 17/2/95 and took photos of the insides and outsides of the houses that had a back road to them. The eviction of the houses took place on Monday 20/2/95 and I was there taking a lot of photos. Andrew Wilson, the then Undersheriff of Lancashire carried out the eviction. It took longer than they expected. Protesters were also at Stanworth Woods a mile away. The eviction s as Stanworth was said to be the largest eviction in the UK. I can’t believe it’s almost 30 years ago!
